Zac Sunderland

This is the story of a young man (16 years old) who is attempting to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe alone. I found his blog about two weeks ago while reading another one of my favorite blogs and have been following his progress since before he left. His website is here.
I told Cami about him and every couple days she asks how he is doing and what is going on. I am tracking his progress on his blog as well as the feed from Google Earth. If you have Google Earth downloaded, you can track his progress from this link. It is awesome to see his update everyday or two.

The previous record of a solo circumnavigation was set by Jesse Martin, a 17 year old from Australia about 10 years ago and if Zac is successful, he will break the record. He plans on the adventure taking about a year or more and wants to be back by his 18 birthday.  He plans on recording his adventure and writing a book and documentary.

I am looking forward to following his progress and reading about his adventures.

Hey Brandon,

Check out http://www.creative-cruising.com/TrackZac

I wrote an interactive Google map wrapper for Zac’s Blogs. It extracts his position and computes the time he’s been gone and the approx distance he’s traveled (and he has left). It is a great way to check his progress and easily navigate all his blogs (via a map!!).

You can get roughly the same detail as the google earth kml but with the added benefit of having the selected blog shown below. In the case of Majuro (we sailed there a couple years ago) I put the blog locations in the correct locations around the atoll and you can really see what an atoll is!!

Check it out and let me know what you think..

Chris,
That is a great interactive map that you put together.
One of my life’s goals is to learn to sail. Even though I am not in a position to pick up the hobby just yet, I look forward to the day when I can learn a little more about it.
Zac (and others like him) are inspirational to many people and I wish them luck and prosperity in their journey.

Brandon

hey so zac how has it been traveling around the world is it really cool or the awsome kind of cool soooooooooooo what has it been like ? please email me back baylie karmie

Brandon,

Glad you like the map.. sorry for the delay in responding, I didn’t think to check back here.

Learning to sail is the easy part, as long as you have the basic skills and the right thought process. When we left 5 years ago my girlfriend had 3 DAYS sailing experience so if that isn’t an inspiration to get up and go, I don’t know what is. We’ve got almost 30,000 miles under our belt and LOVE the lifestyle out here. Most people get hung up at the dock wondering if they (and/or the boat) are ready. No matter how hard you practice and prepare nothing beats the experience of just doing it.

There are some easy places to learn where you can’t get into too much trouble. The http://www.creative-cruising.com site is what we put together for our friends that mauled us when we came home with all sorts of questions. It sort of documents what works, and what doesn’t. Anyway it’s free and will at least get you thinking along those lines… keep us posted and email through the site if you have any questions.

Good luck..

Chris
