My Journey To Full-Time Realtor

In August, 2015 I left the Corporate America. I had been in sales for software companies since 2008 and it was time to make a slight pivot in my life. Don’t get me wrong, the Corporate world was good to us. It gave us a reason to move to Utah for heavens sake.

Every once in a while though, you just need to shake things up a bit and this was one of those times. I had been working in B2B sales and just didn’t feel like I was in my element. I’ll spare the details here but suffice it to say I made the decision to leave and go out on my own as a member of Whitman Burns Realty working specifically as the team Listing Agent. I spent the first month studying part time and acting as an appointment setter for the team until I was licensed and legal to sell Real Estate.

The first full year (2016) I felt like I hit my stride (somewhat) towards the end of the year. I was still trying to get to the point where commissions were consistent but I had a few good deals that closed the in September and November. I never tracked much to know exactly what was working, and I was never consistent enough with a lead source to know where my deals were generated from.

I jumped into 2017 with a renewed vigor to make it a great year and what I quickly realized is that we are in a Sellers market right now. I work a lot with For Sale By Owners and help them figure out how to sell their homes after they have tried on their own. Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for them) most of these homes were selling rather quickly without an agent. I have been slow to hit my goals early on in the new year and am in the middle of changing that.

While Real Estate is the only job I have right now, I have considered taking some part-time work on the side (nights and weekends) to help cover the monthly expenses. I’m exploring other options right now but am fully aware that the less time I spend focusing on Real Estate, the longer it is going to take to build up to where it needs to be.

That is where this blog post (and site) stems from. I need a way to make myself more transparent, and to better track my goals on a monthly basis. I am going to use it to document the journey I am on to make better than a full-time income as a Realtor.  I’m not sure what I’m going to post but figure it will be things like lead sources, activities done, listings taken and closed transactions. I may also throw in some marketing ideas that I am trying but mostly this is just for my own personal use to track what works and what doesn’t. And also give me a place to be accountable, even if it’s just for my own records.

So here we go. I’m excited for the journey and look forward to a successful and profitable career!
